The Southern Time Band is the ‘rock opera band‘ for the cinematic rock opera ‘Southern Time’ that T wrote and, with his team, will soon begin to produce. Every popular rock opera has had a real band (with a real fanbase) performing the music accompanying the fictional drama (as in Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ or The Who’s ‘Tommy’), or the rock band accompanying the fictional work is a fictional band (as in ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’) or a hired band (as in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’). The Southern Time Band is an original rock band, soon to garner its real fanbase, and the music it will create will accompany the ‘Southern Time Tetralogy.’ The Southern Time Tetralogy is a musical docudrama based on the true story of how T acquired and survived HIV and AIDS and the social and spiritual insights he gained because of contracting HIV. The STB’s first album ‘Lost in Love No More‘ serves as the ‘overture album’ to the cinematic tetralogy that will release over the 2020s.
The above is just one purpose of the Southern Time Band.
Another grand purpose of this cadre of incredibly talented musicians is to help meet UNAIDS’ goal of ending AIDS by 2030. They will do this directly by helping reduce HIV stigma, as two members of the band (Justin and T) are openly HIV positive, and T survived AIDS. The stigma, people living with HIV face is one of the significant reasons globally why people still die from AIDS. The very fact of people, both HIV positive and negative, seeing ‘rock stars’ in the media, and listening to them on their devices or in concert, who are openly HIV positive, HIV stigma will automatically be reduced. Indirectly, the Southern Time Band will help end AIDS by donating a portion of everything they make to the Southern Time Foundation, whose primary purpose, at first, is to help end AIDS.
The third and overarching purpose of the Southern Time Band is to make unique, profound, and long-lasting POPULAR music that the world has never quite heard before. Music is the universal language, after all. If there is ever to be ‘world peace,’ great music behind the catalytic movement that brings about such an idealistic utopia, will probably be a significant reason for such wondrous occurrence.
The title of the STB’s first album, ‘Lost in Love No More,’ literally describes the potential possibilities for people living with HIV today. One can now manage a full life living with HIV if they have access to and properly consume effective, affordable, and reliable HIV antiretrovirals. Because of the scientifically-verified fact of “U=U” (if a person’s HIV viral load is Undetectable, the virus is Untransmittable to another person, even while having unprotected sex), people living with HIV can now have ‘normal’ lives, can have relationships with people who do not have HIV, and can even bear children without infecting them! People living with HIV can now live full and unrestricted lives, with the possibility of being just as creative, productive, and healthy as anybody else.
The ‘Southern Time Tetralogy‘ is about helping raise global awareness and a call to action to end AIDS finally, but it is also about making the world a better place to live in for ALL people. Its message is one of love, love for oneself, and all. Therefore, the Southern Time Band should have the same motif!! And it does!!! The STB’s music is currently mostly from T’s classically-trained Western perspective. The current STB band members have genuinely made the ‘Lost in Love No More’ album genre ‘Psychedelic Jazzy-Classical Musical-Theateresque Art Rock.’ T has written only around thirty songs so far for the ‘Southern Time Tetralogy.’ So, there is a lot more room for A LOT more songs. The remaining songs of the tetralogy will come from the other band members, who have varied musical tastes than T’s, and T’s plan was always to include different genres in the tetralogy from around the world. ‘Southern Time’ is about ‘time for the Global South,’ after all, so the tetralogy should also represent musical genres from the Global South.
Preproduction on the first film of the tetralogy, ‘Southern Time, Deception,’ will begin soon after the STB’s ‘Lost in Love No More’ album release, and the STB’s second album will release along with the first film at the end of 2021. Despite COVID lockdowns, the Southern Time Band is determined to find ways to connect and share their music with their audiences.
We hope you enjoy ‘Lost in Love No More’ and look forward to the STB’s next album and online or offline concerts coming soon to an audio and visual station near you!!
